Madonna yet again at the MTV Video Music Awards and took home seven awards at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming one of the biggest stories of the night. This pop singer, dominated this year’s nominations by earning twelve and a half awards including Artist of the Year and Best Album.
Madonna was Worth noting reintroduced when she opened the show, an experience she had not had at the VMAs in 23 years, sending viewers further back in time to one of the most iconic periods in the award show’s history. The ceremony was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on September 27, and was hosted by Snoop Dogg.
Madonna Leads the Night With Seven Wins
Madonna’s seven awards fell across a few of the most significant categories. Madonna received Artist of the Year and ‘Bring Your Love’, her duet with Sabrina Carpenter was awarded Best Collaboration. This were represented in the various wins for her Confessions II The Film: Best Dance, Best Long Form Video, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography. Madonna was also awarded Best Album for Confessions II.
The results gave Madonna one of the strongest nights of her career at the VMAs. Her seven wins came when she was competing against an assortment of the biggest contemporary names in pop including Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Bruno Mars.
Another noteworthy highlight of the night was Madonna. The singer’s first performance at the VMAs occurred in 1984 when she was featured singing ‘Like a Virgin’. Over 40 years on and once again back at the VMAs, she performed the opening song of 2026.
She performed alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, performing material from her current creative cycle. Her performance also joined the performative history she has with the VMAs, an awards ceremony at which she has repeatedly set a new creative chapter using theatrics.
Carpenter’s success of “Bring Your Love” led to one more defining moment in the awarding of Best Collaboration with her song. This added to the year in which she has consistently been present at the larger pop music ceremonies.
Madonna and Carpenter also performed together during the opening sequence, symbolically uniting the present and past generations of pop artists on stage. These two acts, which were performed side by side, became one of the most prominent parts of the VMA ceremony.
Although Madonna took the night for overall wins, Taylor Swift also had a noteworthy night. Taylor Swift won Video of the Year for, “The Fate of Ophelia, ” as well as the very first MTV VMA Artist Director Honors. She also won for Best Direction for “Opalite.”
Her Video of the Year win prolonged her VMA reign, the new Artist Director award acknowledged her work beyond performing too.
