The grisly death of a 20-year-old woman in India’s capital Delhi on 1 January has left the country in shock. As per news reports, the event manager was returning from work in the wee hours of New Year’s Day when her scooter collided with a car. Indian police say the car’s driver, which had four other passengers, kept going for miles, dragging the woman’s body along.
Road accidents are a common phenomenon in India and account for hundreds of thousands of deaths yearly. But this particular gruesome death of a 20-year-old woman has gained national attention and generated widespread media coverage in the country. Several CCTV videos have emerged that show the body underneath the car.
Shockingly, this happened during the New Year when thousands of police had been deployed to patrol Delhi’s roads raising more questions about the case. While the five men in the car are under police custody, not much has unraveled regarding the case.

Delhi police have already obtained the autopsy report of the 20-year-old woman and said it shows all the injuries on the victim were produced by blunt force impact and possibly with vehicular accident and dragging. The autopsy also indicates there is no injury suggestive of sexual assault.

Anjali Singh, the victim, was dragged for over 10km- from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in Outer Delhi-and nearly an hour. The victim’s female friend suffered minor injuries and fled after the incident. The police have, however, traced her, and she is cooperating. Her statement has also been recorded under CrpC 164 and will help in the investigation.
While the police are still undertaking their investigation, the federal home ministry has ordered a swift inquiry. The 20-year-old was the sole breadwinner of her family, with her father dying some years ago. Her mother is no longer working due to an illness. ‘We don’t even have money to perform her last rites,’ her mother said.

Police investigations commenced after they received two calls on Sunday morning. The first call was regarding a woman being dragged by a Maruti Baleno car and another after a woman’s body was found lying on a road in North Delhi. The car was found after launching a manhunt leading to the arrest of the accused.
The accused borrowed the car from a friend to drive it in the night between 31 December and 1 January, police said. Reports have said the men were drunk, with the case now sparking a political row in the national capital.
